Bangkok's "Light Up" Plan: Permanent Night Lighting and Scenic Night Routes

Bangkok is planning to add permanent architectural lighting to several of its landmark buildings and public spaces, alongside new scenic walking and cycling routes designed for use after dark. For anyone who spends evenings exploring the city — or is deciding where to settle — it's a shift worth knowing about.

What's Being Lit

The plan calls for permanent lighting installations at some of the city's most recognizable landmarks, including:

  • Memorial Bridge

  • The Golden Mount

  • Mahakan Fort

Rather than one-off festival lighting that disappears after a few weeks, the goal is year-round illumination that makes these sites part of the city's everyday nighttime landscape.

New Routes for Walking and Cycling at Night

Alongside the lighting upgrades, the plan includes scenic night routes along the city's canals and riverfront — one example being a path from Rama VIII Bridge toward Asiatique. These routes are meant to give residents and visitors a reason to walk or cycle along the water after sunset, rather than treating the riverside purely as a daytime attraction.

The Bigger Idea Behind It

Much of Bangkok's nighttime energy is currently concentrated in shopping districts, nightlife strips, and seasonal festivals. This initiative aims to extend that "active city" feeling beyond those pockets — turning landmarks, bridges, and canal paths into places worth visiting after dark on any given night, not just during a festival.

What It Means Day to Day

If permanent lighting and dedicated night routes come together as planned, areas along the river and canals could become noticeably more walkable and appealing in the evenings — better lit, safer-feeling, and more connected to nearby attractions. For residents, that can mean a genuine evening routine built around a walk or ride along the water rather than a trip only made for a specific festival.

Thinking About Riverside or Canal-Adjacent Living

If evening walkability is part of what you're looking for in a neighborhood, areas near the river and canals stand to benefit most directly from this kind of investment. If you'd like to talk through which spots might fit what you have in mind, our team is happy to help.
